Details

Celebrated artist Mariana Castillo Deball (Germany, b. Mexico 1975) debuts her first solo exhibition in Arizona, featuring a commissioned installation of pit-fired stone sculptures that draw inspiration from the Arizona landscape and explore the intersections of science, archaeology and visual arts.

"The Flames Leave a Feathered Mark on the Clay Spider in the Chamber of Ash and Clay" features seven newly-created pit-fired stoneware objects placed neatly on an artist-designed pedestal. The installation's title, which refers to the pit fire that housed the sculptures and gave them their burnt and ashy exterior, is a metaphor for the transformative power of fire and the cyclical nature of creation and destruction. The ceramics render a mix of natural and made-made items, asking us to consider what items make up our present and past and how those are often connected. Castillo Deball's work questions what archeology is in our present moment and how it can be updated so that it expands to include the history of our communities, their homes and beyond.

This exhibition will run through June 29, 2025.
