6 Unique Winter Experiences Only Found in Downtown Tempe

You’ve heard the expression “when in Rome.” For this post, it’s fitting to say “when in Tempe.” In Arizona, January means cooler temperatures, sunny skies, and the perfect weather for getting outside.  With winter temps around that perfect 70-degree'ish days, Downtown Tempe comes alive with unique events, elevated outdoor dining experiences and endless outdoor adventures—from lakefront recreation to hiking, biking, jogging and sightseeing. Combined, these experiences make Tempe a standout destination all-year-long and for all ages, but we really shine in the winter!

Ready to embark on a winter adventure with your besties, with your family or maybe even solo?

Here are six truly unique experiences you can only find in Downtown Tempe:

1. 2nd Sundays on Mill - not your ordinary outdoor market.

Since 2021, 2nd Sundays on Mill has been a staple in the community. While there may be other outdoor market options in Arizona, 2nd Sundays is unique for a number of reasons. First, it's a series with a theme that changes each month. This means that you can attend every 2nd Sundays event and never, ever have the same experience. The event is located on the historic Mill Avenue between 3rd Street and University, with pop-up food vendors and shopping spanning the distance and creating a truly perfect strolling experience. Finally, the event is great for all ages and is dog-friendly and family-friendly. There is live music from local musicians, outdoor games, roaming performances, hands on activities, 50+ local market vendors, a kids market, and even a barber battle - yes, a barber battle!  January's theme on January 12 is ‘Create,’ and it's all about art, making, and having fun with hands-on activities.

2. Tempe Blooms – Experience flowers like never before!

Returning for its second year, Tempe Blooms is an event unlike any other in Arizona. Truly, this is the ONLY real flower event of it's kind in the entire state of Arizona. Picture this: 21 larger-than-life floral displays draped on buildings, surrounding historic landmarks like the Flour Mill or Valley Theatre, and arranged to stunning perfection by local floral designers. The event also features live music, 10 live mural paintings by talented local artists, and a flower-inspired market with 45 vendors selling handcrafted goods, art, and edibles. Award-winning in its first year, Tempe Blooms is an Instagram-worthy experience that’s as unique as it is unforgettable and it spans across the entire Downtown Tempe district. Discover more here.

3. Tempe Town Lake - perfection at morning, noon or night!

Downtown Tempe’s crown jewel, Tempe Town Lake, offers something for everyone. Enjoy lakeside running, biking, walking, or simply relaxing with a picnic at Tempe Beach Park. The planes flying overhead add a unique touch, and the “A” Mountain, Flour Mill, and Mill Avenue Bridge provide a picture-perfect backdrop. For a more active outing, rent a dragon, swan, or 10-person donut boat from Boat Rentals of America. Prefer to stay on land? Rent a bike or scooter to loop around the lake, or take a leisurely stroll towards the Tempe Center for the Arts and across the scenic pedestrian bridge - a fan favorite!

4. Hike “A” Mountain

Looking for a quick outdoor adventure? Just steps off Mill Avenue, “A” Mountain offers one of the best views in the Valley of the Sun. There are other hiking options throughout Arizona, but what makes "A" Mountain so unique is the close proximity to so many other amenities. Plus that view and a chance to overlook the ASU stadium is just incredible!  🤩

The hike is short but steep, rewarding you with stunning panoramic views at the top. It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Tempe while getting some exercise. The elevation of the Tempe Butte is slightly less than 1500 feet; it stands about 300 feet above the level of the river. When you've descended back onto Mill Ave, we recommend hitting up any of the local food + drink options. Here is a food + drink directory.

Hayden Butte "A" Mountain is located at 100 S Mill Ave

5. Drink in the View at Skysill Rooftop Bar

Elevate your evening—literally—at Arizona’s tallest open-air rooftop bar. That's right, the tallest open-air rooftop bar in the state is located right in the heart of Tempe!  Skysill Rooftop Bar at the Westin boasts breathtaking views, craft cocktails, and elevated dining options. Whether it’s date night, a celebration, a football game, or just a chance to soak in the city lights, this rooftop destination is truly one-of-a-kind. They also host tons of events throughout the year that are open to the public, and fun!

Whether you’re running, cheering on participants, or just enjoying the festive atmosphere, this event is a great way to connect with the community and kick off the year with inspiration.
