This celebration highlights the contributions of Black Poets who have enhanced and enriched the lives of individuals, families, communities, and our entire nation.  National Black Poetry Day is in honor of Jupiter Hammon, the first African American to publish poetry in the United States. He was born in Long Island, New York, October 17, 1711. In honor of Hammon's birth, we celebrate the contributions of all African Americans to the world of poetry during an engaging reception and tribute to the Valley’s Black poets as well as Amiri Baraka, poet and writer of the play Dutchman, which is being presented by the Tempe Center for the Arts from October 4-19, 2019.
