The Gallery at TCA and SHFT proudly present a new short film night that celebrates the cutting-edge work of 3 Afrofuturist filmmakers. In conjunction with the Gallery at TCA’s EXPLORE: go boldly exhibition, which looks at space exploration and human curiosity, this event will give viewers a chance to learn more about Afrofuturism. For pop-culture fans of Marvel’s “Black Panther” movie or sci-fi fans of the books written by Octavia E. Butler, the ideas and imagery associated with Afrofuturism may seem familiar. Today, Afrofuturism is seen in literature, film, music, and art. It’s a movement that is gaining popularity and critical acclaim for its ability to reimagine the past, present, and futures of the Black diaspora, the people descended from Africans forced into slavery. Most importantly, the theme of Afrofuturism in the films presented, gives a platform for diverse voices and dreams to be heard.
The Gallery at TCA would like to thank Tempe-based artist and curator Merryn Alaka for her time and expertise in bringing together these films and filmmakers.
