Winner of the Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History, this powerful play unfolds during an explosive moment in Detroit when the soulful sounds of Motown are breaking records and breaking down barriers. Siblings Chelle and her brother Lank are making ends meet by turning their basement into an after-hours joint. When a mysterious woman finds her way into their lives, tensions escalate both in their home and in their community—and they find themselves caught in the middle of the ’67 race riots. Set to the soundtrack of 1967, this journey to an important moment in history debuts in Arizona.
